Have you ever thought, “Why is it that when I read the Bible, it makes no sense?”, yep me too. I mean, why would we want to try to read something when the sentences just seem to be so confusing and what seems to be out of some Shakespearean play?
If you, like me, whenever you picked up a Bible, it was written in Old English, nothing like our modern dialect. The way it was written was like a whole new language, where the words and sentences didn’t seem to make for easy reading. I could barely get past the first paragraph before closing it and giving up. It’s no wonder I could never understand it.
It’s not just the language used that’s the problem. Firstly, nowadays, there are many different translations available, which make reading the Bible far easier to understand.
But there’s actually something bigger that’s happening here.
God has intentionally placed a spiritual veil over the eyes of non-believers (Isaiah 44:18), so we can only understand His Word if we turn to Him with an open, humble heart (2 Corinthians 3:16). Genuinely seeking Him, to connect with Him, to understand who He is, to understand for ourselves and not just follow what other people say about Him.
Having a relationship with God is a personal one.
If you really want to know the truth about something, you need to investigate it for yourself. Put on your detective hat and go in search of the truth. God will reveal Himself to you if you ask, BUT your heart must be genuine, not to try and prove to yourself that you’re right and you know best, because God will know your heart is not genuine in seeking the truth of who He is. Then you will not find Him.
Wanting to know the truth is allowing yourself to be wrong. Being prepared to say, I know nothing at all. Seek the truth in all that you do, and you will find God, the veil will be lifted, and you will see this world in a completely different way than before.
“But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.”
2 Corinthians 3:16 (NIV)
Something I say to myself regularly is: “I only want the truth, no matter what it is, no matter who is involved, no matter where it takes me, no matter if I’m right or wrong. All that matters is the truth.”
Try it for yourself, consciously aim to seek the truth in all you do and watch what happens.
