Don’t Know What You Need?

Neither did I.

When you’re buried under noise, pressure, confusion, and distraction, it’s almost impossible to think clearly let alone know what you need. You just know something isn’t right. There’s a restlessness, an overwhelming feeling of “it’s all too much” and you want to get out of this trap you find yourself in, but you don’t know how. Your brain can’t find the answers no matter how much you’ve tried you can’t see a way forward.

Maybe you’ve tried mindfulness, manifestation, or spiritual healing. Maybe you’ve dabbled in faith but got burned, confused, or feel God has let you down. Or maybe you’ve just kept your head down, barely surviving, and never stopping long enough to ask deeper questions.

There’s got to be more to life than this.

If you’ve come to a point where nothing is really working, where you’re tired of feeling stuck, where you want to clear the blocks or mental torture in your mind so you can move forward with peace, understanding, and purpose, this is a good place to pause.

This page isn’t here to fix you or pressure you. It’s here to help you start clearing the path. To help you quiet the noise and begin noticing what’s pulling your heart and mind. The ultimate goal? That you would encounter the truth of Jesus Christ and find the clarity and freedom you’ve been searching for all along. You may not realise it yet, but everything you’re seeking is in the truth of Jesus Christ.

Perhaps this sounds a little wild, but I urge you, do not close this browser tab because I mentioned Jesus. It’s time to start looking for the truth of life, no matter where it takes you. Be open and willing to give Jesus a try; you’ve really nothing to lose.

Say this with sincerity…

“God, I need you. Please help me see a way forward. I surrender everything to you. I trust that you will guide me and show me a better way of living. God, I want to know the truth about myself, this world, and what life is truly about. Jesus, please calm the chaos in my mind and help me see clearly. Please show me, guide me, and reveal the truth to me. I’m willing and ready to listen and be shown the truth. Amen.”

I wish I knew years ago what I know now.

My life was beyond busy, and there was no space for me to breathe, let alone think. I was completely consumed with my clients’ and their needs. Without realising it, I was taking on other people’s opinions, thoughts, beliefs, and wants.

I based everything around work, and I lost who I was. I didn’t know what I liked or where my life was going. If I tried to think about any of these things, my mind would freeze and get locked up. I physically couldn’t speak on any of it. Words would fail me; nothing would come to my mind. It was completely blank, like a wall had been put up in my mind to stop any thoughts flowing at all. Nothing could get past this blockage, no matter how much I tried.

It was only when I started to create space in my day where I had downtime that I started to notice my thoughts and behaviour. Because my mind wasn’t constantly consuming information, I was paying more attention to my mind. I’m not going to tell you what I did because that’s the long way around. I’m going to give you the shortcut so you miss out on the mess I made. Don’t get me wrong, this shortcut still requires work on your end, so don’t for one second think this is going to be an easy ride, because it won’t be. But it is the one that will guide you to true and lasting peace, the right way.

If you’ve never thought or heard of Jesus, please continue to stick with me in the midst of possibly one of the craziest things you’ve heard all day.

We like to make everything about us.

If we took the spotlight off ourselves for just a second, and instead turned it on Jesus, our lives would change. I know this may sound crazy if you don’t know Jesus or have a personal relationship with Him. Trust me, I know. I thought I was losing my mind because a whole new world opened up to me where I could see things I couldn’t see before. Me, the woman who didn’t even think about God or the Bible, is now hearing from God and experiencing Him first-hand, over and over again.

Jesus is my Lord and Saviour, and He ALONE changed my life. He saved my life. And I want the same for you. I wish you could feel what I feel every day, all because I believe in Him and trust in Him. And I will do, every day for the rest of my life.

It may seem counterintuitive to stop thinking about ourselves and our problems when we’re the ones struggling.

So how could shifting our focus to Jesus ever help?

Jesus brings light to darkness, peace to the storm, and truth to lies. He is the Holy Son of God the Father and our only way to true everlasting peace. Jesus didn’t wait for people to be good, He met them in their mess and transformed them (Luke 5:32). And He will meet you in your mess and transform you as well.

Let’s get something clear, without trying to confuse you too much: Jesus is God, the Father is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. Three persons, one God.

Confusing, I know, but just so you’re aware… Jesus = God. I will be referring to both Jesus and God, but in short, they are the same.

Stick with me now…

How will knowing Jesus help me?

  • Take a look at yourself and make a note of what thoughts you have.
  • Are they happy thoughts? Self-criticising? Criticising others?
  • Positive? Negative? Why?
  • Am I looking at the “experts” or people close to me to tell me who I am, what to do, or what I believe?
  • What do I turn to when I feel lost or anxious?
  • Am I afraid of slowing down because I don’t want to face what I’ll find?

We often don’t realise how loud the world is until we try to be still. But if you’re never still, you’ll never hear the One who can lead you forward in the right direction.

It’s time to make the decision to…

Humble yourself enough to hear the truth

Be open to hearing things that you may not currently know or understand anything about

Understand you don’t know everything, regardless of your experience or expertise

Decide you only want the truth, whether you’re right or wrong

Try and make sense of the things you read – scribble, draw, or create diagrams

There are two mental health providers; God and Satan.

Who will you trust?

Jesus loves you.

The universe feels intelligent - because it was designed by an intelligent Creator

  • I know you believe in divine energy, vibrations, or universal intelligence.
  • By this description, the universe is an impersonal force, but what you’re sensing is the handiwork of a personal and intentional Creator (Romans 1:20).
  • Just like a painting requires a painter, creation requires a Creator.
E

We feel drawn to something greater - because we were made for God

  • The spiritual hunger people have isn’t meant to be satisfied by practices like manifesting, astrology, or energy healing – but by a personal relationship with God. That’s why these practices leave you feeling empty, still searching for more.
  • The Bible says God has placed eternity in our hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
  • A deep thirst can’t be quenched by anything but the living water of Jesus Christ (John 4:14).
E

Spiritual experiences are real, but they’re not always from God

  • Many people feel energy shifts, hear messages in meditation, or receive “downloads” of knowledge.
  • The danger is, that not all supernatural experiences come from God, so don’t delude yourself into thinking so. Satan disguises himself as an angel of light and his minions follow suit (2 Corinthians 11:14-15).
  • Just because something feels real or good doesn’t mean it’s from the true God. The way to tell whether what you’ve experienced is true is to know what Scripture says. But if you’re not reading and studying God’s Word, how will you know?
  • Counterfeit money looks real but has no actual value. The same goes for the false light of Satan.

Recognising the lies.

Rest in the confidence that…

You are saved by God’s grace alone, through your faith alone, in Christ alone.

  • Not because of your performance
  • Not because of your feelings
  • Not because you “manifested” anything

You were dead in sin (spiritually dead), and now you are alive in Christ (spiritually alive).

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”
Ephesians 2:8 (ESV)

Let everything you do from this moment on rest on that truth.

What is God’s grace? Grace is God giving us what we don’t deserve. It’s referring to His kindness, love, and help given to us freely, even though we haven’t earned it and don’t deserve it. Especially salvation, forgiveness, and new life through Jesus Christ.

Cling to the cross, not the cosmos.

As a new Christian, it’s really important that you fully understand why Jesus had to die on the cross. If you don’t fully understand this, how can you truly understand why Jesus came?

I remember hearing about Jesus at school and then as an adult, around Easter and Christmas. But I never knew why He died, and I didn’t question it either. It’s crazy to me to think we grow up hearing certain things and never questioning them.

Jesus dying is a massive deal, and what’s even more massive is the fact that He rose from the dead! How could I not have questioned this? How could I have kept hearing about Jesus each year and never really considered Him or why this man’s story is so widely known, and why it’s so important that we know why He died and rose again?

I heard Jesus was God’s son, but why did He have to die? As a Christian, it’s imperative that you fully understand why and what this means.

Read this very brief overview to get a better understanding.

The Bible alone can change us.

As we read, the Holy Spirit will guide us into revelation.

Getting Started

There are a few things you should consider getting other than just a Bible and attending a church. Below is a list of things you would benefit from in your walk with Christ.

Study Bible

A study Bible will help you understand what you’re reading. As a new Christian, you’re going to want an easy translation and some commentary explaining the text. A study Bible will give you this.

A couple of good ones to choose from are:

For the NLT Bible above, this is the one I have, but there are many other beautiful designs you can choose from. Find one you’ll love to hold every day, and make sure the Bible you choose has red letter text for when Jesus is speaking, as it can be a little confusing without it for beginners.

If you do not have the funds to buy a Bible, there are free resources online where you can read the Bible and its commentary. The YouVersion App is great, but there are also many others available as well.

Bible Dictionary

A Bible dictionary is essential for studying the Bible. You cannot use a normal dictionary or even Google at times, as it may not give you the correct information. The terminology is different, and you want to make sure you understand the words for what they were intended, and a Bible dictionary will do that.

A good one to start with is The Student Bible Dictionary. There are other Bible dictionaries out there, but for beginners, this is a great one, and it’s not too chunky to carry around if you’re going out to study the Word.

Sticky Notes

If you’re anything like me, when I started reading the Bible, I had a ton of questions about everything, and the best way I found to keep track of all my thoughts and questions was to use sticky notes and put them in my Bible.

I purchased these sticky notes. I opted for a small size (38mm x 50mm) so I could fit more on a page. I use different colours for different things. I use yellow for all my general thoughts and questions about the text, and so I buy these in larger packs. I know I may never have the same thoughts or questions about the Scripture the next time I read it, so I write everything down.

I head the sticky note with the book name, and then the chapter and verse, e.g. Romans 12:2. I also date it at the bottom. This way, when I come back to that specific text the next time, I can see if I have a better understanding, or I could spend some time doing a deeper dive into the scripture, where I can use other resources to help me get the answers.

The aim for me is to, at some point in my life, remove all the sticky notes and mark my Bible – I now have an interleaved Bible, and for every page of text there is a blank page where I can write and make notes. I want this Bible to grow with me and be the place where I can grow deeper in the Word each time I read. I only want the truth in my Bible, not my questions and what I think I understand. So for now, my sticky notes remain until the deep study sessions answer my questions. This is my Bible (ADD LINK TO A POST ABOUT MY BIBLE AND WHERE TO BUY).

Studying the Bible will be a lifelong journey, so do not set the expectation that you will understand everything easily or even in your first read-through. It takes time to process the text, and it is far, far deeper than you can ever imagine. When you start to understand the Bible, you will realise there’s so much that you don’t know.

Find a Biblical Church

Finding a church that you enjoy going to is crucial in your walk with Christ. Unfortunately, a biblically sound church isn’t always easy to come by.

If you’re in Sussex, The Sussex Gospel Partnership has a good selection of biblically sound churches you could choose from.

Here’s a list of other great churches you may want to check out. [ADD A LINK – ASK LYNNIE IF SHE HAS A LIST?] and a checklist to do when deciding what church to attend [ADD BLOG POST]

Most churches have their services online, so it’s worth watching them before you go in person, so you get a feel for what the church is like. Every church leader presents their sermon in a different style, so see who you enjoy listening to and then, when you’re ready, go in person.

Whatever you do, do not be in the Bible on your own, as we can, without realising it, interpret the Bible incorrectly. We can end up not understanding the Bible in the correct context, and essentially creating a cult of one. Context is crucial when reading your Bible, and when you find a church, you will be able to join a Bible study group to help you.

It’s time to unlearn the lies the world taught you.

Verses that helped me as a new Christian

“Trust the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;”

Proverbs 3:5 (NIV)

Why I love this verse:

  • It helps us to remember that we do not know best, God does. Trust in Him and His Word over our own thoughts and feelings.
  • Our judgment can get clouded by our emotions, which aren’t stable. Jesus is our firm foundation.
  • Our feelings and emotions change all the time depending on what is going on in our lives. God’s Word never changes, and when we cling to His truth, we are much more able to deal with life’s challenges.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.“

Romans 12:2 (ESV)

Why I love this verse:

  • It showed me not to listen to what the world tells you to be, and who you should be. This is based on human thinking, trends, and self-centred and self-idolising behaviour.
  • Our thinking has to change. We are conditioned to think things based on human understanding, not on what the Scripture says.
  • Each morning I ask God to renew my mind and to fill me with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. My thinking and understanding of God, His will, and His Word have changed so much and now I see the world completely differently to how I did before.

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

John 14:6

Why I love this verse:

  • Jesus is the truth, and everything He says is true. By holding everything to His standard, we see the lies in the world.
  • There is only one way to heaven, through Jesus Christ. If we do not build a personal relationship with Him, He will deny us in front of the Father, and we will end up in hell for eternity.

Your sin is desensitising you.

The more you sin, the less you feel the consequences of it.

This leads to suppressing the Holy Spirit within you.
